On Sunday, February 10th, the 59th(LIX) Super Bowl took place. While the game had many memorable moments, the halftime show was a “cannot miss event.” 17-time Grammy award-winning artist, Kendrick Lamar, delivered a powerful 13-minute performance with special guests SZA, Serena Williams, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mustard.

Even though the performance was entertaining, it is important to highlight the message Lamar wanted to capture. The halftime show opened up with Samuel L. Jackson portraying Uncle Sam, a popular symbol of the U.S government and American patriotism. Then panning to the stage designed as a game console; this spoke to the idea that the world we live in is a simulation and we as Black people are simply pieces of the game controlled by the government.

Kendrick Lamar amplifies this message by performing his hit songs “Humble” and “DNA”; both becoming anthems for the Black community since their release. One of the night’s visual highlights took place during “Humble” where the background dancers were dressed in red, white, and blue. Arranged as the American flag, this further symbolized how America thrives off of Black creativity.

Returning to the notion that Black artists cannot be suppressed in America, Lamar performed his 2024 hit song “Not Like Us”. Just coming off of a five-time Grammy win for the single last week, the whole stadium was tuned in. It is clear that Lamar thought outside of the box and delivered a performance that would spark conversation. Keeping in mind that it is Black History Month, Kendrick Lamar definitely showed out for the Black community and achieved a historic moment in music.
