Panthers Look to Regroup Against Miles College
Clark Atlanta University entered Saturday’s matchup hoping to build momentum from a win at Morehouse College last week, but Kentucky State set the tone early and never surrendered control. The Thorobreds defeated the Panthers 30-3 in a game defined by first‑half dominance and missed offensive opportunities.
The Thorobreds opened the game with a sharp, efficient offensive drive, capped by quarterback Juan Gainous’ 25‑yard touchdown pass to Darius Cyprian, immediately putting Clark Atlanta on its heels. Kentucky State extended the lead in the second quarter when Tristan Thomas powered in a rushing touchdown, pushing the margin to two scores. At halftime, Kentucky State led 17–3, building on a 10–0 advantage in the first quarter.
Clark Atlanta finally got on the board in the second quarter with a Cedric Oglesby field goal, but the Panthers struggled to find a rhythm in the red zone. Drives stalled, momentum slipped, and Kentucky State controlled possession and pace throughout the first half.

Despite the loss, freshman running back Kelan Anderson delivered one of the bright spots for CAU. Anderson led the Panthers in rushing, finishing with 60 yards on 14 attempts, showing toughness between the tackles and consistency in moving the chains.
After the game, Anderson talked about stepping into a major role so early in his college career. His response carried confidence and ambition: “I am trying to be rookie of the year. I got goals, too.”
Anderson’s response to a question about how he felt playing in his first night game was less about excitement and more about evaluating his performance. “Honestly, I felt like I could’ve done better in the game and executed more. It felt like we shot ourselves in the foot with this game.”
Another standout was wide receiver Chry’shawn Sellers, who posted five receptions for 70 yards, giving CAU its most reliable production through the air. Sellers also electrified the crowd with a 31‑yard kickoff return, one of the Panthers’ biggest momentum plays of the afternoon.
Still, Clark Atlanta’s offense couldn’t overcome early miscues, and Kentucky State’s physicality dictated the game from start to finish. Now sitting at a pivotal moment in their season, the Panthers must regroup quickly as they prepare to face Miles College on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m. right back at Panther Stadium. Miles enters the matchup with a 1–2 record. The question now becomes whether Clark Atlanta can turn flashes of promise into a complete performance next week.
