CCO of the Month: Public Relations Student Society of America

At Clark Atlanta University (CAU), numerous organizations cater to different interests and academic disciplines. One such organization is the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), a student-led group affiliated with the National Public Relations Society. Public relations (PR) is the practice of building and managing relationships between individuals, companies, and brands while shaping how their image is represented in the media.
While many people associate PR with publicists handling celebrity or brand image crisis , it encompasses much more. PR professionals work in a variety of areas, including public opinion analysis, crisis communication, reputation management, and more. They also handle tasks such as writing press releases, conducting interviews, and managing social media.
At CAU, they offer many opportunities for students seeking a career in public relations. They have had panel discussions, workshops, agency tours, and networking events. These opportunities are designed to help students build their resumes and gain the experience needed in their field. Courtney Sykes, the president of CAU’s chapter, expressed, “Rebuilding this organization means a lot to me. It has been amazing to witness our growth and the strong community we’re creating together!”
PRSSA offers networking opportunities that connect students with different professionals in the field. This is accomplished through workshops, events, and conferences. One workshop they have done so far is the “Let’s Link” workshop where they discussed resume-building and networking tips and offered students help to create and enhance their LinkedIn profiles.
This organization also offers panel discussions such as their “Digital Media Marketing” discussion with Dominique Morrisey; founder and CEO of The DM Agency. They also connect students to internships such as Comcast, Direct TV, Delta Airlines, and more. During school, they have hosted movie screenings and PR campaigns. Joining this organization can also help students gain more leadership skills through event organizations and team collaborations.
T’yanna Allen-Williams, PRSSA Vice President and Miss PRSSA, expressed, “Before joining PRSSA, I lacked direction as a PR major. Since joining, I’ve had the opportunity to watch the organization grow, expand my network, and prepare myself professionally for the PR industry.”
The Public Relations Student Society of America at Clark Atlanta University is an excellent resource for mass media students interested in pursuing careers in PR. Through workshops, networking events, and hands-on experiences, PRSSA equips students with the tools they need to thrive in the industry.
Whether the goal is to build a resume, expand a professional network, or gain real-world experience, PRSSA provides the support and opportunities essential for success. For those serious about a career in public relations, joining this organization represents a valuable step toward achieving career goals.
